One Person, No Vote: How Voter Suppression is Destroying Our Democracy, by Carol Anderson
Some people believe that voter fraud is a huge problem in this country, but research has shown over and over and over again that our elections experience very little fraud. Unfortunately, by focusing the discussion on voter fraud, we are missing a much larger problem: voter suppression. This, unlike fraud, is very real.
Everyone needs to read this book. It will stun you. It will make you angry. It will help you see that all the new voting laws being proposed around the country in response to ‘voter fraud,’ are, in fact, a continuation of the effective voter suppression methods that began when black citizens were given the right to vote.
There are too many facts and stories in this book to share. But every voter who loves this country, whether you are red or blue, has a responsibility to learn this history so we don’t repeat it. As The Washington Post said in its review, “Her book drills down into how the right to vote is being slowly erased with too few of us noticing.”
It’s long past time for all of us to start noticing. This book is one place to start.
